13 Reasons Why Art is a Good Thing

We see art just about every day in our lives, unless you live in a place with no color. Art is important to the world, and here are 13 reasons why art is important.

  1. Art makes the world more colorful. It adds variety to the everyday world around us, and makes the Earth more enjoyable to look at.
  2. Art gives you a chance to express yourself. Some people may not know a lot about you. Drawing can define your personality if you put your heart and soul into it. In fact, most people’s art revolves around feelings. If you’re feeling angry, there will be lots of red and an angry mood in the art.
  3. You can make new friends. If you focus on drawing things that other people like, you can talk about it together.
  4. Art improves your creative skills and thinking. If you are a creative type of person, doing art can make you even better.
  5. It gives you confidence.ย If you can express things in art and become more open to the world that way.
  6. It gives you teamwork skills.ย Collaboration is a huge part in society, and we do it a lot. Working together for big projects and such will make you better at your teamwork skills.
  7. Art can give you a better chance at a career, and can prepare you.ย Most jobs nowadays require creative and open minded people. Doing art will make things easier for you.
  8. It can make us calmer.ย If you are angry at something, just sit down and draw for a bit. Trust me, it helps.
  9. You can tell stories your own way.ย If you’re not good at writing, art is another very similar way to tell stories. You can either make comics, or just draw anything that can tell a story.
  10. It allows you to explore new opportunities.ย Art is a way to find what you’re good at.
  11. It can make you realize what you want to do.ย If you like drawing, you can make lots of money by selling paintings and stuff.
  12. It can make you a smarter person.ย There are some things that art can teach you, such as patience.
  13. Art can have a huge impact on lives, and change the world if possible.ย Some art pieces have had a large impact on lives and affected lots of people.

So maybe, your art can be important too.

If you try hard.

Paper V Computers

People like to do their art in different ways. The most common way is using paper and pencils, pens, and other materials. However, this is the 21st century, and we have the internet and electronic devices, such as computers.

Computers added a lot to people’s lives. It gives them a new way to communicate and make new friends. Computers have also gave artists new ways to make art. Some people download art programs such as Paint Tool SAI or Photoshop, but most computers come with a cheap program known as MS Paint.

Sure, if you know how to operate it, you can make masterpieces in MS Paint.

But there areย way moreย advanced programs that have things such as layers and other tools.

But what’s the real difference? Which is easier?ย Iย personally am fine with using both.

First, computers.ย Most people dread drawing with a mouse because the lines end up shaky and uneven. I draw with a mouse and my works come out okay, but there are tablets you can hook up to your computer that you can use to draw for your computer. You can also try finding some app that lets you draw on your phone, tablet or any portable device.

However, the cons of using a computer is that they areย expensive.ย Not everyone has access to one, and heck, even stuff like phones and tablets are expensive too.

Another con is that it can take a long time to get used to a program on your device. Unless you areย so smart and can teach yourself (me sometimes), you would have to constantly look up tutorial videos on YouTube. And most likely they don’t even come with instructions. For me, and hopefully a lot of people too, I just experiment with all the features and functions to see what they all do. I use Paint Tool SAI to draw on my computer, and for most of the time I just played around and since I’m so used to it, I’m not that willing to switch to another program.

So just play around with features until you get the hang of it.

Now, paper and pencils are more convenient and way less expensive to get. You can find paper and pencils if you just look around any drawing aisle at a store.

Forย me, drawing on paper is easier and, like I said earlier, way more convenient. If I am doing something else on my computer or just don’t want to draw on my computer at the time, I would just grab a journal or a plain piece of paper and a pencil and draw.

How to Avoid Art Theft

Art theft is a common problem on websites.

What is art theft? It’s pretty self explanatory. Art theft is when somebody steals your art, posting it online, and claiming that they were the ones to make it.

There are a few different ways to avoid art theft.

If you just put “don’t steal” in the description, not everyone is going to listen to that. There are jerks that don’t listen and will steal it anyway. So, I don’t recommend trying that.

Putting a signature on your art CAN be helpful.ย Sometimes. For digital art, if you’re using flat background colors with no shading, gradients, or anything like that, people can easily mark over it. For traditional art, don’t write your signature in pencil, because people can erase it or put whiteout over it.

The most helpful thing to do is to put a watermark on it. Some websites, such as DeviantArt, allow you to put your own watermark on it when submitting your art. Others, however, don’t.

A simple way to make a watermark if you’re using a digital program allowing you to make multiple layers is to first, make a new layer. Next, turn down the opacity so it’s still visible, but not interfering with the actual picture. Then, take a dark color and draw a logo or your signature on the picture. Also, on your watermark, make sure to include a link to your website or your account name.

Watermarks are useful. If your art somehowย doesย get stolen and it has a watermark on it, people can easily recognize it as yours with the watermark, especially if you have your account/website name on it.

Sharing Your Art and Getting Better

So, you think you’ve drawn good drawings?

Depending on what you have access to you, sharing your art can be different in many ways.

For example, if you don’t have electronic access, you have limits on who your art can reach. If youย doย have a computer or some other electronic device, your art can reach to a lot of fans. Most people nowadays are on computers, phones, and other devices, and a majority of those people have accounts on websites that allow you to share your art with the world.

Take DeviantArt for example. A lot of people use DeviantArt as a way to share their art with other people. DeviantArt has functions to easily find art you are interested in. You can tag your art or post it in groups of a certain subject. Other people who are in and watching the group will see your art.

Make friends! Art is a whole lot better when you have friends to support you. Not only that, but if they want, you can do a collaboration project with them. Collaborations (most people call them collabs) are where two or more people work on one project together. Art collabs usually involve one person doing something (wether it be drawing and coloring something fully, or doing lineart) while someone else does something else. Collabs are a fun way to do art.

Don’t just stick with one style. Experiment! The whole point is to get better. Don’t takeย criticism as a negative thing, unless some jerk meant it that way. For my art, I’ve gone through plenty of styles to draw specific things, and am still experimenting on different styles and things to try out while drawing.

Use what is easiest for you and what you can access more to draw. If you can access a computer often, try getting an art program for your computer. I use Paint Tool SAI for my drawings on my computer. If you are not good with a mouse, try getting a tablet to hook up to your computer. There are tablets out there that let you draw on them and it will show up on the computer.

If you can’t access an electronic device (computer, phone, tablet, etc), you can use paper and a pencil. Because of schools, youย shouldย have at least a pencil and some paper or a spare journal around. For me, drawing on paper is easier than drawing with a mouse (yes, I draw with a mouse, and don’t use any of those drawing tablets. I will say I have some skill drawing with a mouse. It’s pretty easy for me.) Drawing with a tablet is essentially the same as drawing on paper, except you have all your tools on one small electronic device.

Elements and Principles of Art

Elements of Art and Principles of Design

To art, there is something called elements of art and principles of design. These are important to an art piece, and it gives them character. Here are the elements of art, along with a description of what they are and what they do.

Line โ€“ Lines are self explanatory. Lines can be all sorts of things, but they are like the base of your drawing. You use lines when youโ€™re doing the outlines of your drawing.

Color โ€“ Also self explanatory. Color is, well, adding color to your drawing to make it stand out. Itโ€™s okay if you donโ€™t use color, but it makes your art so much better to look at and much less boring if you have color.

Shape โ€“ Shape is all of the different shapes in your drawing. Some of the more basic shapes are circles, squares, triangles and rectangles. There are shapes with interesting names too, like the squircle and the nonagon.

ย ย ย ย ย ย  Form โ€“ Form is the physical shape of your drawing. It can be all sorts of different shapes put together.

Value โ€“ Value is the lightness and darkness in a color. All colors have tints and shades.

Space โ€“ Space is how much space your drawing takes up. There are two types of space, positive and negative space.

Texture โ€“ Texture is how soft, rough, etc. an object looks. All objects have different textures.

Now thatโ€™s all of the elements of art. Here are the principles of design.

Balance โ€“ Balance is how different pieces of your art (lines, color, etc) are arranged, and how they link up

Proportion โ€“ Proportion is how big or small an object is compared to another one.

Emphasis โ€“ Emphasis is the area or part of a drawing that draws the attention to the viewer.

Variety โ€“ Variety is combining visual elements to create complex relationships.

Movement โ€“ Movement is the focal point in a drawing.

Rhythm โ€“ Rhythm is a combination of different elements but repeated

ย ย ย ย ย ย  Harmony โ€“ Harmony is when all elements of a piece of art combine to make a balanced, complete whole

There are many elements in art that are important for drawing. Without the elements of art and principles of design, your art would be nothing.
